Former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion won the 2015 Ted Hughes award for these deeply moving poems, which were originally written for a BBC radio performance. The work was based on recordings of conversations Motion made when he met soldiers returning from Afghanistan and their families. The poems address the effects of war, using threads of the conversations. Motion has said of the poems:
‘When I … began reading through the transcripts of these talks, my first instinct was to look for a linguistic richness that conveyed these ideas. Then I realised I was looking for the wrong thing. The expressions that most interested me were in-between the sentences I had heard spoken. They were implications, not bold utterances. The pity was in the pauses, the silences, the suppressions; the poetry, if there was to be any, had to catch these things, and not hunt for eloquence.’ (Andrew Motion: Coming Home, BBC Radio 4 blog, 5/11/2014)
