Katsura 1977: signed poster by Frank Stella (Addison Gallery, 1981)
This beautiful poster has been signed by the artist, Frank Stella in an unnumbered edition of 100. Printed on fine paper (Warren Lustro Dull paper, this is the original exhibition poster for Stella’s Metal Reliefs exhibition at the Addison Gallery of American Art, at the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.
A steel-grey metallic border, spatter-painted green background, and brilliant rainbow type highlight the centerpiece: Stella’s 1979 sculpture Katsura, made from aluminium and wire mesh with colourful oil paint covering the surface. The poster is printed with multicolour metallic ink to echo Stella’s metal relief surfaces.
The Addison Gallery asked Frank Stella if he would design a poster for their exhibition. Stella responded enthusiastically and was involved in every aspect of its creation, including significant original drawing and collaborating with master printers and designers. Proofing and printing of the poster were executed both at the printing studio Petersburg Press had set up for the artist in his home in New York's West Village, as well as Petersburg Press’ own studio at Lafayette Street.
One of the greatest living and most influential American artists, Stella was born in Malden, Massachusetts in 1936. The spotlight fell on him in the 60s and it has stayed put ever since as Stella has tirelessly experimented with scale, form, colour, depth, texture and material to create an extraordinary range of work.
