CH71 Lounge Chair des. Hans J.Wegner, 1952 (made by Carl Hansen & Son)

£2,790.00 £1,990.00

The CH71 Lounge Chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1952. It's perfectly proportioned to be both elegantly compact and supremely comfortable. With its slender frame and flowing, sculptural form, the CH71 is a testament to the legendary Danish designer’s unique understanding of woodworking and upholstery

As well as being a highly skilled cabinetmaker, Wegner possessed a thorough knowledge of upholstery techniques, allowing him to conceive complex pieces requiring expert craftsmanship. The CH71 lounge chair is one such design, with cushioned curves that wrap flawlessly around a slim, angular frame. The designer also gave great consideration to the chair’s proportions, resulting in a streamlined piece that can add style and softness to even the smallest of spaces. With an array of textiles to choose from, the chair can be upholstered in a variety of colours and textures, while the legs and handles are available in oak and walnut with various finishes.

About Hans J Wegner

Among Danish furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) is considered one of the most creative, innovative and prolific. Often referred to as the master of the chair, Wegner created almost 500 in his lifetime – many of them considered masterpieces.

Wegner was part of the spectacular generation that created what is today referred to as ‘the Golden Age’ of modern Danish design. “Many foreigners have asked me how we created the Danish style,” Wegner once said. “And I’ve answered that it was a continuous process of purification and of simplification – to cut down to the simplest possible design of four legs, a seat, and a combined back- and armrest.”

The son of a cobbler, Wegner was born in 1914 in Tønder, a town in southern Denmark. He began his apprenticeship with Danish master cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg when he was just 14 years old. Wegner died in Denmark in January 2007, aged 92. Today almost all of the world’s major design museums exhibit his work.
