High Back Bird Chair des Harry Bertoia, 1952 (made by Knoll Studio) is backordered. We will ship it separately in 10 to 15 days.

The Bird Chair is an astounding study in space, form and function by one of the master sculptors of the last century. It's a brilliant piece. The proportions are especially appreciated by tall people.

Pictured here with a black rilsan frame and Cato upholstery, lead time 8 -10 weeks. You can order this precise combination on this page, it will be made to order for you. Many variations of the Bird chair are available, so if bright yellow isn't for you, please contact us or visit us in store. A matching ottoman is available separately.

Harry Bertoia studied at the same US art institution as Charles & Ray Eames, Eero Sarrinen and importantly Florence Knoll and although he dabbled in painted art and jewellery design (both of which now command hefty prices) he saw himself foremost as a sculptor. Knoll, who had, since finishing art college, started a furniture company remembered her old friend and tried to persuade him to join the company. He resisted but the lure of his own studio and a no pressure, ‘let’s see if anything takes shape’ attitude was too great and he relented. Three years passed and finally the great sculptor revealed his one and only collection of furniture.

The collection is one of the few that really does transcend the boundaries of art and furniture. Is it a piece of sculptural furniture? Is it a sculpture that is comfortable to sit on? You decide. It is without doubt one of the best looking chairs from any angle. Better from behind? The argument rages.

The chairs are still hand made in Italy. Amazingly the steel rods welded by hand (and that’s a lot of welds).
