Still Life with Magnolia poster by Henri Matisse
Still Life with Magnolia is one of the many floral still life paintings Matisse produced throughout his career. During an interview with the Swedish art historian Ragnar Hoppe in 1919, Matisse explained that he had a garden filled with flowers and to him they were the best lessons in colour composition. For this painting, the magnolias have been defined by the strong complementary colours of the green vase against the red background. Matisse has also surrounded the flowers with other colourful and highly decorative ornaments to create an abstract celebration of colour.
