This archive/ vintage poster, titled Merton of the Movies, was published by List Art Posters and printed by Fine Creations Inc. It was the first poster published by HKL, Ltd., a nonprofit organisation, and is listed in Corlett's catalogue raisonee (61.) This striking colour screen-print on silver foil showcases Lichtenstein's bold Pop Art style. This poster is in great condition but, has some signs of age as shown in the images.
Merton of the Movies was a 1919 novel by Harry Leon Wilson, written after a brief stint in Hollywood. It was adapted into a stage play and three films. Lichtenstein created this poster for a 1968 performance of the play at the Minnesota Theatre Company / Tyrone Guthrie Theatre. The design evokes the Art Deco sensibilities of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
