James Rosenquist
Together with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist (1933-2017) is one of the greats of American Pop art. From the late 1950s he was instrumental in establishing Pop as a movement, changing our expectations of visual art. Rosenquist worked as a billboard painter of American adverts, which fed into his desire and ability to work on a monumental scale. In the 60s and 70s his art reflected a complex society of consumerism, technology, severe brightness and deep darkness - and peered into a complex future.
