Pink Sam c.1954 poster by Andy Warhol

£12.00

Artist: Andy Warhol

Pink Sam is wonderful whiskered company - undemanding too, with no litter tray requirements or veterinary insurance premiums.

Andy Warhol himself couldn't get enough of the feline species: he had absolutely loads of cats in the 50s and 60s, all named Sam with the exception of a single Hester. It was during this period that Warhol self-published his book 25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy (1954), a series of ink wash cat portraits, as well as a book of his mum Julia’s cat drawings entitled Holy Cats by Andy Warhol’s Mother. If you'd paid a visit to Andy and Julia's Carnegie Hill townhouse during this period, you might well have been given a parting gift of a kitten: these decades were productive for Andy as well as for Hester and the Sams.
