Cake / Pie server des. Arne Jacobsen for Georg Jensen

£28.00

This piece is very beautiful and very useful.

Arne Jacobsen is considered one of the greatest exponents of mid-century design - the furniture he created, especially his chairs, have become iconic. Perhaps less well known,  but equally as important, is Jacobsen's range of cutlery for Georg Jensen. The pieces were created in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel, Copenhagen (along with his famous Egg & Swan chairs) of which Jacobsen was the architect. Jacobsen wielded such close control over the project he not only designed the building but also the furniture, door handles and of course the cutlery! In doing so he created what is now considered to be the worlds first ‘design hotel’.

Jacobsen was so pleased with it that he used it again when he designed St Catherine’s College, Oxford, his only UK building.

It is perhaps hard for us now to understand quite how futuristic this cutlery was when it was launched in the 1950’s. However so forward-thinking was its shape considered to be that ten years after its inception when Stanley Kubrick filmed 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) he insisted the AJ cutlery had a starring role. Now, two decades after the film is set, you have to agree Stan was right - this stuff still looks like it has been beamed in from outer space.
