Ians Beesley and McMillan - great chums, great artistic collaborators and great drinking pals - have created a love letter to the urban pub in the form of this book of post industrial walks to public houses in the North of England. Part photography book, part poetry book, part hiker's guide, it's very special and exclusive to Salts Mill. 

Hand- drawn maps and photography by Beesley and new poems by McMillan come together to create a charmingly personal celebration of local landscapes and local drinking houses. As Beesleys says, “most pub walks are really bucolic - there’s always fields, there’s always sheep. I wanted to make it post-industrial. I love walking through the countryside as much as the next man but I also cherish cement, graffiti, street lighting - all beautiful and human to me, and with a good beer in an interesting pub at the end….  or even, sometimes, a beer stop at the halfway point and at the end."

Take a Walk on the Mild Side has its own companion beer, Sup Up and Away Brew No.2, produced by the fast-growing Amity Brew Co in Greengates and available in Salts Diner. One of the walks in the book takes in Amity and includes some amusing Roger Moore related trivia!

Images from the book will be included in Mr Beesley’s latest additions to his Salts Mill exhibition Life Goes On in Gallery 2, open Wednesday – Sunday 10am-5pm, admission free. Many are also included in his major retrospective book Life which is also available at saltsmillshop.
