In a French Restaurant, 1982: large silkscreen poster by Howard Hodgkin (signed, unnumbered edition of 500)

£1,800.00

This superb large poster has been signed by the artist, Howard Hodgkin in an unnumbered edition of 500. It's very special: while many posters are four colour photographic reproductions, this archive poster is an original 29 colour screen print designed by the artist and printed on high-quality heavy paper stock.

Signed by the artist in red crayon. the texture alone is extraordinary – the poster has been produced so that the textures of the individual brush marks are visible: 29 layers of colour build up a rich, pigmented surface that mimicks that of a painting.  It’s 100% not a flat print - it's a faithful reproduction of Hodgkin’s In A French Restaurant, oil on wood, 1979.

Created by the Hodgkin for his exhibition at Knoedler Gallery, New York, 1980, it reproduces the eponymous oil painting to the same size as the painting itself. The 29 printings meticulously mirror the original. The vibrant screen print positions Hodgkin’s painting on a black background, with white text at the bottom reading “Howard Hodgkin Paintings Knoedler Gallery New York 1980.”

While the work pictured is abstract, the title tells us that the space is that of a restaurant, perhaps viewed from above. Hodgkin was interested in extracting the feeling of scenes: the emotion and energy of a single moment, though the physical settings were often abstracted beyond recognition.
