What a palette!

This poster features Francis Bacon's Man and Child (1963), a work in the collection of the  Louisiana Museum, Denmark, and from whence this poster hails.  British, Irish-born Bacon (1909-1992), is known as a figurative painter for his raw, disturbing imagery and is considered among the most important painters of the 20th century.

Bacon's artistic roots can be found in interwar surrealism. From the 1940s he developed his strongly personal style - described as a kind of "figurative action-painting", which contains a synthesis of violence and beauty, a simultaneously brutal but also tender presence. The scene of Man and Child seems to be one of emotion and contemplation. What a stunning painting.
