£50.00
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican surrealist artist recognised for her autobiographical paintings. Inspired by the country’s popular culture, she explored questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, and class in Mexican society. In 1937 she produced ‘Self-Portrait Dedicated to Leon Trotsky’ commemorating her brief affair with exiled Russian revolutionary leader Leon Trotsky. For this painting, Kahlo has presented herself wearing a long-embroidered skirt, fringed shawl, and delicate gold jewelry inspired by the distinctive clothing of the Tehuantepec women in Southwest Mexico.
