Short Cuts, 8th New York Film Festival poster by James Rosenquist

£325.00

A fabulous archive/ vintage Rosenquist poster, designed by the artist for the 8th New York Film Festival Short Cuts. Rosenquist mimics rolls of film in three vertical strips, rendered in his signature vibrant colour palette. This first edition poster, created for the festival held at Philharmonic Hall (now Avery Fisher Hall) from September 10-20, 1970, captures Rosenquist’s dynamic style and the innovative spirit of the event, making it a significant piece for both art and film enthusiasts. We are told only 750 of these posters were produced.

Together with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein,  Rosenquist (1933-2017) is one of the greats of American Pop art. From the late 1950s, he was instrumental in establishing Pop as a movement, changing our expectations of visual art.  Rosenquist worked as a billboard painter of American adverts, which fed into his desire and ability to work on a monumental scale. In the  60s and 70s his art reflected a complex society of consumerism and  technology - and peered into a complex future.
