Reigning Queens: Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, 1985 (dark outline) poster by Andy Warhol
£12.00
Andy Warhol's lifelong interest in the intertwined themes of fame and celebrity meant that his portraits of the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Elvis Presley are entirely tied up in our awareness and understanding of their careers. In 1985 Warhol embarked on his largest portfolio of screenprints, Reigning Queens, containing sixteen prints of the four ruling queens at that time in the world - one of them, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, is reproduced in this poster.
Tate explains Reigning Queens thus: "Based on official or media photographs, Warhol .. incorporated abstract blocks of colour that, although screenprinted, appear collaged. (Warhol) has also combined printed elements derived from drawings, which emphasise details such as jewellery." We think Andy made her Maj look even more fabulous than ever.
