This archive/ vintage poster, titled Merton of the Movies, was published by List Art Posters and printed by Fine Creations Inc. It was the first poster published by HKL, Ltd., a nonprofit organisation, and is listed in Corlett's catalogue raisonee (61.) This striking colour screen-print on silver foil showcases Lichtenstein's bold Pop Art style.
Merton of the Movies was a 1919 novel by Harry Leon Wilson, written after a brief stint in Hollywood. It was adapted into a stage play and three films. Lichtenstein created this poster for a 1968 performance of the play at the Minnesota Theatre Company / Tyrone Guthrie Theatre. The design evokes the Art Deco sensibilities of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
