If you've ever taken the New York City Subway, you've used a Vignelli design. Lella and Massimo Vignelli shaped the visual language of the twentieth century — the American Airlines identity, the NYC subway signage (with Bob Noorda), furniture, books, interiors.
Massimo studied architecture before founding the Vignelli Office of Design and Architecture in 1960 with his wife, Lella. The pair established Vignelli Associates in 1971, a vehicle for focusing on projects that incorporated their industrial, furniture and graphic design talents.
In 1967, Bobby Cadwallader retained Massimo Vignelli to create a new graphics program for Knoll. The resulting designs, based largely on a grid, provided the foundation for all basic communication needs, including stationery, business cards, stickers, tags, boxes, brochures and four-color ads for trade magazines and publications like The New Yorker, Vogue and Fortune.
Their philosophy was radical in its simplicity: "If you do it right, it will last forever."
Pierre Junod will never forget his first conversation with Massimo Vignelli. The world-famous designer told him with a smile: "Above all, I'd like a watch to be timeless." Shortly after, he drafted this watch together with his wife Lella. They designed a frame that covers the case and expands the glass of the face into a subtly coloured, interchangeable ‘halo’. With a Vignelli watch, you can choose every day between 16 rings of different colours. And since 1994, Pierre Junod continues to develop unique watches with architects and designers like Michael Graves, Richard Meier, and Mario Botta.
Pierre and Danuta Junod assemble the watches in their atelier in Bienne, Switzerland, in order to perpetuate the highest quality standards for Swiss made watches. More than 90 percent of the parts – the movement, clock face, hands, steel case, and even the packaging – are produced within walking distance from Bienne.
