This original exhibition poster was printed in 1968 to promote the show David Hockney Complete Prints at Galerie Mikro, Berlin. Stock of these is becoming particularly low.
The beautiful image of two men in bed reproduces one of Hockney's thirteen etchings for Illustrations for Fourteen Poems from C.P. Cavafy, translated by Stephen Spender and Nikos Stangos. Hockney's first major series of etchings since A Rake's Progress (1961-3), it was, says Tate, ' conceived almost entirely in terms of line, and contained some of the artist's most accomplished line drawings to that date.'
Hockney had made earlier references to the pre-war Greek poet but this series was Hockney's first major statement inspired by the poet. The artist didn't work with the book of poems open next to him, nor did he see each work as a visualisation of a particular poem. Rather, his etchings are visual equivalents of the moods and themes within Cavafy's homoerotic works.
We sell a selection of poems by the superb C.P Cavafy on this site. Nikos Stangos edited the text of Hockney's very special Martha's Vineyard book which you can find for sale elsewhere on this site
This is an authorised David Hockney poster. It's an archive / vintage poster, printed in 1968, now collectable and in short supply. Our stock is sold as new, that's to say like it has come straight from the source, isn't on the secondary market and has never been sold before. Given its age the condition is good but as this is a 50+ year old piece of paper imperfections are unavoidable, with tiny edge tears which would be disguised by framing and surface imperfections.
Please hang away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. We send out posters rolled in tubes.
