Le Corbusier: L'Unité d’Habitation, Marseille poster

This super-sharp large poster features a drawing of Corbusier's ground-breaking housing development, L'Unité d’Habitation, Marseille.  The building was completed in 1952. Such is the importance of this project that In July 2016 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site - just like Salts Mill and Saltaire! UNESCO selected l'Unité d'Habitation as it's 'a major prototype of a new housing model based on a balance between the individual and the collective...(that) played a pioneering role in promoting the trend of Brutalism.'

Architecture critic Jonathan Glancey wrote on the BBC website 'Nothing like this concrete megastructure had been seen before; the way it stood on those robust legs with its rough textured skin and its curious kinship to both a geological outcrop and an ocean liner... Thrilling then, the Unité still excites eye and imagination when first seen.'

Le Corbusier - one of the most influential design practitioners of the Western world - was born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris in 1887 in Switzerland. This architect, designer, urbanist and writer was a pioneer of modern architecture. His career spanned five decades, with buildings constructed across the globe. He was a pioneer in studies of modern high design and was dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities. He died in 1965 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France.
