Le Corbusier: Couvent Sainte Marie de la Tourette (La Tourette Monastery ) poster

When Father Marie-Alain Couturier approached the agnostic Corbusier to 'create a silent dwelling for one hundred bodies and one hundred hearts' he knew he'd get something truly great. This poster shows a drawing of the resulting building - Corbusier's Dominican Monastery Sainte Marie de la Tourette, one of his last completed buildings in Europe. Designed in 1953, construction was finished by 1960. It's so divine that jaws have never quite left the floor. 

In July 2016 the monastery became a UNESCO World Heritage Site - just like Salts Mill and Saltaire! UNESCO selected the Couvent de la Tourette because they believed it to represent 'a unique synthesis of the achievements of the Modern Movement, combining purist forms, brutalist textures and revolutionary solutions in terms of living space. Its 1 of 17 buildings around the world that UNESCO chose to represent Le Corbusiers work as 'a testimonial to the invention of a new architectural language that made a break with the past.'

About Le Corbusier

Le Corbusier - one of the most influential design practitioners of the Western world - was born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris in 1887 in Switzerland. This architect, designer, urbanist and writer was a pioneer of modern architecture. His career spanned five decades, with buildings constructed across the globe. He was a pioneer in studies of modern high design and was dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities. He died in 1965 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France.
