Aalto Vase Ultramarine Blue - 251mm - des. Alvar Aalto, made by Iittala

£140.00

By: Iittala

Design pioneer Alvar Aalto’s asymmetrical waves shape won the 1937 Paris World Fair. In the decades since, it has become a staple of Scandinavian interior design. Taking inspiration from his native Finland’s landscape, Aalto’s waves combine function and sculpture. Each unique crystal vase is first mouth blown, then pieces are hand cut before going through several polishings at the Iittala Glass Factory.

The iconic Aalto vase adds a striking detail to any home interior. Long stemmed flowers look particularly stunning in this tall vase while the ultramarine blue perfectly reflects the organic 'wave' form.

Alvar Aalto Collection

In 1936, Alvar Aalto’s series of glass vases won first prize in the 1936 Karhula-Iittala Glass Design Competition. Compared to the decorative objects of the time, the simple yet organic shape of this vase was a revolutionary statement. Inspired by waves (“aalto” in Finnish) in the water, the vase is a symbol of Finnish design and one of the most famous glass objects in the world.

Each and every vase in the Alvar Aalto Collection continues to be mouth blown at the Iittala factory and comes in a wide range of colours and sizes. The Collection is a staple of modern Scandinavian design and Iittala’s most iconic series. Additional items inspired by Aalto and created by Pentagon Design such as steel bowls, wooden platters and votives can also be found in the Alvar Aalto Collection.
